Dive Brief
- Thanks to the World Cup, the Brazilian E-Commerce Association (ABComm) says it expects a 27% increase in the country’s online commerce sector in 2014, a total of some $16.6 billion.
- Investments in local infrastructure and 4G made in anticipation of the games should lead more Brazilians to buy online during this year of the World Cup, which begins in June and lasts a month, ABComm said.
- ABComm expects increased sales especially in electronics and sporting goods.
- The acceleration would be on top of a boom of sorts in Brazil’s e-commerce sector, which grew 29% last year over the year before and generated $13.1 billion in sales despite a slowing economy.

Brazil’s businesses, regulators and consumers are all turning their focus on the country’s e-commerce segment. Last year, the government instituted new rules to broaden the market while also extending consumer-protections to online purchases. With this more clear and open online retail market and a boost from the World Cup, the country's growing online retail sector could shed some bright light in its otherwise dimming economy.
