Dive Brief:
-
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. Tuesday said it is raising pay of more than 100,000 U.S. workers starting in July.
-
The hourly wages for mangers at service-oriented departments like electronics and auto will rise from $9.90-$18.81 to $10.90-$20.71. Specialty areas like delis will see pay rise from $9.20-$18.53 to 9.90-$18.81.
-
When store associates are promoted, their wages will rise by $.90 per hour rather than just $.50 per hour, the company said.
Dive Insight:
These latest increases come after a similar announcement in February from Wal-Mart that starting wages for U.S. employees would rise next year and that the company would enhance its opportunities for workers to advance — a decision that it said would cost the company $1 billion in wages and new training.
The move has rocked the retail industry and led other retailers, including Target and T.J. Maxx parent TJX, to also announce wage increases.
But worker advocates say the increases don’t go far enough because they still don’t provide a living wage in most areas of the country and because some working conditions like erratic scheduling make it difficult for workers to hold other jobs or care for children.
