Dive Brief:
-
EBay is banning merchants from offering payment systems ProPay and Skrill, according to a letter sent by the marketplace to its sellers.
-
UPDATE: According to eBay, the move is due to low usage ("far less than 1% of [eBay] users") of these payment systems on the site.
-
PayPal effectively raised its merchant fees recently by 32% by eliminating volume discounts.
Dive Insight:
This agreement, by default, cements the relationship between eBay and its former payments unit. The idea is that eBay is, naturally, PayPal’s biggest client, so PayPal would take quite a hit if eBay were to switch gears when it comes to payments.
PayPal is the most natural and probably the easiest way to pay on eBay at the moment. So the question here may be less about ProPay and Skrill and more about Apple Pay, which is emerging as the main contender in the emerging mobile payments market.
