After a massive backlash to its Pride Month merchandising last year, Target this year is reiterating its support of the LGBTQIA+ community, but its specialized assortment will be aimed only at adult consumers and available only in select stores and online.
Following disruptions in stores ahead of Pride Month last May, the retailer pulled some of its Pride displays, which sparked another backlash from LGBTQIA+ groups and allies.
In an emailed statement and corporate blog post, Target didn’t address last year’s troubles, including people destroying signage and merchandise and confronting store workers, which it said then were “threats impacting our team members’ sense of safety and well-being while at work.”
This year’s collection includes adult apparel, home products, food and beverages, and items from LGBTQIA+-owned brands, and will be sold in select stores and online, “based on historical sales performance,” according to the post. Last year the assortment also included children’s apparel and toys.
Then and now, the retailer reiterated its support for the community, both within and outside its own organization, saying by email Monday that it “will have a presence at local Pride events in Minneapolis and around the country, and we continue to support a number of LGBTQIA+ organizations.”
"Target is committed to supporting the LGBTQIA+ community during Pride Month and year-round,” a spokesperson said. “Most importantly, we want to create a welcoming and supportive environment for our LGBTQIA+ team members, which reflects our culture of care for the over 400,000 people who work at Target. We have long offered benefits and resources for the community, and we will have internal programs to celebrate Pride 2024.”
