Dive Brief:
-
Nearly 10% of consumers belonging to shipping clubs, including Amazon Prime, are discouraged enough by late deliveries of their orders to consider quitting those clubs. Some 9.7% of shipping club members in general and 9.6% of Amazon Prime members specifically are considering not renewing their memberships, according to a survey by Bizrate Insights, a division of retail marketing solutions firm Connexity (formerly Shopzilla).
-
A third (33%) of online shoppers belonged to a shipping club as of December last year, and 28% had a free trial membership then. Overall, 43% said they may not renew — 73% of those on the free trial said so, while 31% of paid members said so.
-
For Amazon Prime in particular, 28% of online shoppers in December said they have a Prime membership, and 26% of those said they had a free trial. 21% said it took longer than the promised two days to receive their orders. Some 41% said they may not renew.
Dive Insight:
This study reveals some vulnerabilities in shipping-club memberships, including Amazon’s Prime. Younger shipping club members seem to be the most impatient of the bunch, the study found.
And as same-day delivery services continue to proliferate, this impatience with shipping clubs could get worse. But note that these disillusioned survey-takers said they “may” cancel their memberships. A free trial could yet get them hooked, especially in the case of Amazon Prime members, who enjoy a number of other perks.
