Dive Brief:
-
RadioShack is adding “Fix It Here!” stations to more than 284 retail stores in a pilot program to provide same-day, in-store repairs to smartphones and tablets.
-
Mobile phone sales have been declining for all electronics retailers, and RadioShack says its new service could be a way to drive new customers into their stores.
-
Technicians offering the service — repairs to phones and tablets no longer under warranty — receive 40 hours of training and their work is guaranteed by RadioShack for 90 days.
Dive Insight:
RadioShack’s “Fix It Here” service seems to definitely fill a void. Smartphone sales are a bit sluggish in part because so many people now own one. Plus, repairs once the warranty is up are hard to find — many people opt for the expensive solution of buying a new phone or walk around with a diminished device.
If RadioShack Fix It Here program is successful, the retailer may indeed have found a good way to get people into its stores.
