Dive Brief:
-
Don Kingsborough, PayPal’s retail chief, left the company last month ahead of its split from eBay, he confirmed Wednesday.
-
Kingsborough joined PayPal in 2011, tasked with developing the payments website as a point-of-sale option for physical retailers. But the payment system hasn’t gained much traction as Square and Amazon have continued to dominate in that space.
-
He told Re/Code that he’s “a little frustrated” that PayPal hasn’t had much success as a payment option for physical retailers.
Dive Insight:
There will be a lot of people leaving PayPal in layoffs previously announced by the company ahead of its split from eBay. Kingsborough says his departure is unrelated to that, however. He hasn’t left to take another position, at least not yet, saying that he’s most comfortable working as an entrepreneur.
It’s not clear where PayPal’s efforts to grow its physical retail products stand exactly. PayPal is one of the most trusted payment forms in the world, studies have shown, yet it hasn't gone very far with physical retailers.
“I think we didn’t stay on strategy completely and therefore we didn’t accomplish as much as we should have,” he said. “We just didn’t stay focused on the things that would make a difference … on distribution and on a clear method to take people who shopped online and bring them into stores.”
