Dive Brief:
-
Seattle-based Amazon.com Wednesday said that longtime CFO Thomas Szkutak will retire in June next year.
-
Brian Olsavsky, the company’s VP of finance for the global consumer business, will replace him, after 10 months of transition time.
-
Olsavsky and Szkutak have both been at Amazon for 12 years, working together in various financial positions, so observers expect little change to come from Szkutak’s retirement.
Dive Insight:
Amazon has famously eschewed profits to beat its competition on price and to invest in technologies and business ventures. Recently shareholders have seemed to grow weary of that model, and the retailer's stock price has fallen 15% this year. While many observers expect little change from a CFO who has been working at the company for so long alongside his predecessor, the pressure on Olsavsky to show profitability and cost control may be greater than it ever was for Szkutak.
