Dive Brief:
-
New York-based Loehmann’s, famous for its discounted high-end apparel and chaotic community dressing rooms will re-open next month as an online retailer.
-
The iconic store opened in 1921 and expanded over the years to 100 stores across the country, but filed bankruptcy and closed all its stores and its website last year in the face of stiff competition from other off-price stores.
-
Prospects for the new Loehmann’s are unclear considering the competitiveness of online shopping. One possible perk for local shoppers could be a same-day delivery option, the company says.
Dive Insight:
In its hey-day, shopping at Loehmann’s was a classic shopping adventure of architectural-dig proportions, as was trying on clothes in its community dressing rooms, immortalized by old-school humorist Erma Bombeck in her book All I Know About Animal Behavior I Learned in Loehmann's Dressing Room. Those things cannot be replicated at a web-only Loehmann’s, but the move may help capitalize on the love many shoppers, especially New Yorkers, have for the store. Loehmann’s has to be super-savvy about its online presence and do all it can to capture its old magic. Watch this space.
