Dive Brief:
-
Iconic Los Angeles retailer Kitson is conducting a going-out-of-business sale and is closing all 17 stores in California, Nevada, and Oregon.
-
The company’s e-commerce site is already down.
-
The retailer may be revived online depending on what happens with discussions with “interested parties” to sell the company name. The company was founded in 2000 as a single West Hollywood boutique and the chain was a favorite of celebrities in the early 21st century.
Dive Insight:
There’s no word on just what happened at Kitson, but it’s likely that the retailer was unable to compete in a world where most things can be found at Amazon and where so many other retailers are beefing up their omnichannel operations.
The retailer was in a high-profile struggle earlier this year with the Hudson Group, with which is ran airport concessions in California.
Store closings and going-out-of-business sales began Thursday, when the e-commerce site was also apparently shuttered, signaling the end of an era.
The retailer was a common backdrop for many a publicity-seeking celebrity early this century, as paparazzi frequently camped out nearby because of the good odds of snapping a photo of the likes of Rihanna or Sienna Miller.
