Dive Brief:
-
Retailers can breathe a little easier this year because U.S. consumers are ready to spend during the holidays, according to Deutsche Bank chief international economist Torsten Sløk.
-
Sløk says a Gallup survey earlier this year shows that U.S. shoppers will spend the most money on the holidays since the year before the recession hit, 2007.
-
His analysis goes against other reports that say U.S. consumers worry about outside economic forces like the downturn in China, a government shutdown, or other factors. Instead, it states that there’s a high level of consumer confidence at all income levels.
Dive Insight:
This analysis goes against many surveys that Retail Dive and other outlets have noted so far and says that retailers and the U.S. economy in general will benefit greatly from spending this holiday season.
Sløk’s report is reassuring at a time when investors have become somewhat worried about those outside economic forces and less sanguine about the U.S.’s relatively healthy economy. Retailers’ stocks have taken a hit as many expect a subdued holiday spending season.
Of course, only time will tell, and that time is rapidly approaching.
