Dive Brief:
-
Trustmark National Bank and Green Bank N.A. have dropped a lawsuit against Target and its cyber-security vendor, Trustwave Holdings Inc., that they had filed just last week.
-
The banks gave no reason for the withdrawal of the lawsuit, which had been filed over last year’s major security breach that left 40 million credit and debit cards vulnerable to hackers.
-
Trustwave Saturday had denied it was liable in the security breach, saying it was never responsible for Target’s cyber security in the first place.
Dive Insight:
This move is likely better news for Trustwave than Target. But the argument over which entities could have done better — banks issuing credit cards or the retailer that suffered the malware causing the breach — is likely not over. Banks contend that chip-and-PIN technology, which is standard in most areas of the world except the U.S., wouldn’t have prevented the disaster, while the retailer disagrees. As this tussle over who’s at fault continues, the question remains: How can we prevent the next one?
