Dive Brief:
-
Laura Lee, who heads Google’s East Coast content partnerships for Google/YouTube, has been named to American Apparel’s board of directors.
-
In her position, Lee oversees more than 150 television, film, new media, and original programming partnerships, according to the company. Before her current position, she was MTV’s vice president and head of business development and operations.
-
Lee is the second woman to be named by the retailer, which is known for controversially racy and some say sexist ads and marketing. The first woman named, Colleen Brown, joined the board just late last month.
Dive Insight:
In addition to a history of controversial, sexually tinged marketing, American Apparel reportedly ousted its founder as CEO earlier this summer in part due to inappropriate sexual conduct. The appointment of women to the retailer’s board is seen as a late but highly necessary move as it transitions out of its Dov Charney era.
