Dive Brief:
-
Amazon Prime members, who recently got news of a membership fee increase, will be able to enjoy several HBO shows and movies previously only available through HBO Go or for purchases through Amazon, iTunes, or as digital hard copies through retailers.
-
The content, which will be available by the end of May, will feature mostly older shows like the Wired, Deadwood, and The Sopranos at first. In time, shows like Veep, Girls, and The Newsroom will also become available.
-
No details from either HBO or Amazon about the finances of the deal or how long the content will be available through Amazon Prime, except to say it will be “multi-year.”
Dive Insight:
This deal with HBO may quell any fears observers had that, with its recent increase, Amazon had overpriced its Prime membership. Although no one expects Netflix to suffer much from this improved competition, it does boost Amazon’s content greatly and will likely do much to help it retain and possibly attract Prime members, despite the recent annual fee rising from $79 to $99.
