Dive Brief:
-
Amazon.com Inc. Tuesday added more than one million items to its Canadian website.
-
The move brings its Canadian site nearly in line with the number of items offered on its American site.
-
The past year has been a busy one for Amazon.ca, which has added 16 new product categories, putting intense pressure on domestic retailers like Loblaw Cos. Ltd, which recently acquired Shoppers Drug Mart and has a limited online presence.
Dive Insight:
Amazon.ca is getting ambitious, and the company says it’s not done, either. There have been conflicting reports on retail prospects in Canada, where Nordstrom recently said it would scale back its ambitions for its previously planned Rack stores and where Target lost nearly $1 billion last year. Clearly, Amazon remains undaunted. It’s local competing retailers, which in Canada have done little to establish major e-commerce sites, that will feel the pinch the most. Welcome to the Amazon effect, Canada.
