Dive Brief:
-
After announcing plans of its expansion into Mexico last week, Amazon said Tuesday that its site there is live as Amazon.com.mx, calling it Amazon’s “biggest international launch ever.”
-
In addition to its own storefront, Amazon.com.mx has a third-party sellers marketplace and Fulfillment by Amazon, and the retailer is now offering three of its Kindle devices in Mexico.
-
E-commerce in Mexico is growing rapidly — 34% each year — and Forrester Research has said that the number of Mexicans buying online could increase from 8.4 million in 2013 to 18 million by 2018.
Dive Insight:
More than 110 million people live in Mexico, but e-commerce there is still in its early stages. That makes it prime for growth — Forrester sees e-commerce sales jumping 150% from $2.2 billion in 2013 to $5.5 billion in 2018.
Amazon’s hardly an e-commerce pioneer, there, though. MercadoLibre, Wal-Mart, and Inditex all have been selling online there for a while. But Amazon’s entry could boost e-commerce in Mexico even more.
“Latin America is growing faster than e-commerce, and Mexico is a really good gateway into Latin America,” ChannelAdvisor chairman Scot Wingo told Bloomberg.
