From back to school preparations (what, already?), to important port negotiations, here are some happenings in the world of retail not to be missed this week.
Amazon’s Many Legal Battles: Amazon’s legal department was certainly busy last week. The e-retailer faced multiple regulators on issues, including billing unsuspecting parents for purchases made by children on apps downloaded through its store. In France, it made “changes” to its shipping fees after the country introduced a ban on free shipping of book orders. Both issues are still being addressed.
Changes at Microsoft: In a company essay distributed Thursday, CEO Satya Nadella wrote of changes ahead, including the introduction of new software and, what some are saying, hints at layoffs.
Looking at Back to School: Forbes is already highlighting retailers to watch during the upcoming back to school retail rush, with an eye on fast-fashion retailer Forever 21 and teen retailer Abercrombie & Fitch.
Port Talks: Retailers may be affected by negotiations between the International Longshore and Warehouse Union and the Pacific Maritime Association, as they continue to iron out details of a new contract and avoid significant disruptions at West Coast ports. The ports currently handle more than two-thirds of U.S. containerized cargo, according to the National Association of Manufacturers.
Southern Hemisphere Takeover: Woolworths Holdings Ltd. made moves on Monday to take control of competing retailer David Jones Ltd. The $2 billion deal would craft a company that could potentially compete with fast-fashion giants like Zara and H&M, as it would create the second largest retailer in the southern hemisphere.
