It's been another weird week in retail. Whole Foods and Progressive teamed up to insure turkeys this Thanksgiving, two popular brands released their own cookbooks and Costco started selling a very impressive bottle of bubbly.
This, and more, in this week's retail therapy.
Whole Foods, Progressive introduce 'Thanksgiving Turkey Protection Plan'
Thanksgiving is just under two weeks away and like many things in 2020, this year's celebration may look a little bit different. Many are forgoing large family gatherings to instead spend the holiday with just those in their households. And for some, that may mean preparing the whole meal on their own.
While novice chefs have had tools like the Butterball hotline, which has expanded to even be accessible on Amazon Alexa devices, other companies are chiming in this year to ensure the holiday is one to remember.
Whole Foods Market teamed up with insurance company Progressive to introduce the "Thanksgiving Turkey Protection Plan." Consumers can take advantage of the first-of-its-kind insurance plan if they purchase a Whole Foods Market brand turkey between Nov. 11 and Nov. 22.
"As we anticipate more smaller Thanksgiving gatherings and first-time cooks tackling turkey preparation this year, the Thanksgiving Turkey Protection Plan allows customers the freedom of culinary exploration, knowing all is not lost should their cooking go astray," said Theo Weening, vice president of Meat and Poultry at Whole Foods Market. "We want to help customers rise to the occasion and take on that turkey with confidence for less-stressed Thanksgiving meal preparation."
With the plan, customers will receive a $35 Whole Foods gift card if their "claim" of a turkey mishap — be it undercooked, overcooked, burnt, dry or something else — is accepted on TurkeyProtectionPlan.com from Nov. 26-27. It's limited to the first 1,000 claims, so we suggest that if there's a chance you'll end up forking it up this year, maybe try to do it sooner rather than later.
The junk-food aisles' bid for a spot in your cookbook library
As some embark on cooking a Thanksgiving meal for the first time, it may be overwhelming determining where to start the recipe search. Thankfully, a couple brands we know and love have released cookbooks in time for the holidays.
Mountain Dew — you know, the beverage with that radioactive-like tint of green — this week announced the launch of its first-ever cookbook to help ring in the brand's 80th birthday.
Recipes in the book include "Bada$$ Breakfasts," which apparently involves green eggs and pancakes; "DEW Does Dinner," featuring a a Mountain Dew-brined turkey perfect for Thanksgiving; and "Dang Good Desserts," which — as the name suggests — involves Mountain Dew in dessert form.
"Our fans have been creating delicious, outrageous, and genuinely mind-blowing recipes with MTN DEW for years," Nicole Portwood, vice president of marketing at Mountain Dew, said in a statement. "In many ways, this is the long-overdue love letter to those beautiful edible creations and the people behind them."
The book will retail for $30 and will be available for purchase online beginning Monday.
But that's not all. Cheetos — another PepsiCo-owned brand — also announced this week it released a cookbook of its own.
To raise money for the nonprofit World Central Kitchen, the brand released a limited-edition holiday cookbook that features recipes all using Cheetos as an ingredient. The book features recipes from celebrity chefs, like Anne Burrell, Richard Blais, Ronnie Woo and Casey Webb.
Fans could snap up a book by donating at least $35 to the cause, but unfortunately as of press time the products were all claimed. Don't fret, though. Select recipes will be available online at MoreSmilesWithEveryBite.com.
Costco brings 3L worth of good cheer
If you've lost all sense of time this year, you're not alone. First, it felt like the "March" show was on a never-ending re-run, and now we're snowballing uncontrollably right into the holidays.
But that's OK because Costco has everything we need to finish up our endless to-do lists.
Behold, a 3L bottle of prosecco.
The bottle, which holds the amount of four standard 750mL bottles, was spotted by Instagram user @costco_empties and is selling for just $29.99.
So go ahead and pop open a bottle to share with your partner — and maybe a few friends — when you're wrapping the kids' holiday presents. It's sure to make the experience way more enjoyable, and to be honest, your kids never really cared about presentation anyway.
There's no limit to the possibilities of what one could do with this much bubbly: initiate the biggest "toast" to a hopefully better year in 2021, create the most epic prosecco fountain that would be enough to impress even the Neiman Marcus champagne vending machine gods, or use it to fill a mini pool with. Hey, it's called self-care.
Cheers, everyone.
