As the editor of Retail Dive, it’s my job to keep tabs on every piece of retail-related news—the good, the bad, and the silly. From “artisanal water” to a not-quite-right revelation about earrings, here are the most interesting reads from the past week.
Neiman Marcus’ wealthy shoppers
In this week’s not-so-surprising surprise, Buzzfeed unveiled that the typical Neiman Marcus shopper is rich – like, really rich. More than 40% of Neiman Marcus’ customers have a total household net worth of $1 million or higher, and 38% have a median household income of more than $200,000.
'Thirst is the universal language’
“What is wetness?” “It’s like opening up a Mark Twain story…without the raciest parts.” “You’re not paying for a liter of water—it’s a liter of adventure.”
These, and many other choice quotes, are found in Paul Riccio’s mockumentary-style video poking fun at the artisanal water craze spreading across the nation’s hipster havens and communities.
Not safe for retail
Cosmopolitan magazine is getting censored by two retailers, Rite Aid and Food Lion. Both retailers think that the sexual content splashed on the magazine’s covers should be shielded with blinders in their stores — causing some to say this is a double standard not imposed on men’s magazines featuring women clothed in much less on their covers.
$90 lipstick
Known for its iconic red-soled heel, shoe designer Christian Louboutin has added a $90 lipstick — that can double as a necklace — to its new beauty collection inspired by Louboutin shoes and handbags.
Get it together
The Internet went crazy after one misinformed Tweet went viral claiming that the plastic ring on the backing of earrings was supposed to be removed. (Ladies, you’ll know what I’m talking about. Men, just ask the nearest woman.)
After my nineteen years of living i have now realized that you are supposed to take the plastic part off pic.twitter.com/ejValCaa7G
