Dive Brief:
- Poshmark is weaving generative AI into its seller platform to make it easier for users to list items, the company announced Thursday. The tool, Smart List AI, is intended to work as "co-pilot" for sellers on the secondhand marketplace.
- Upon uploading a photo, the AI tool can generate listing elements such as a title, description and category. Users can review and edit the generated content before posting their listing. The tool will appear as a button in the sell tab on the Poshmark app.
- The Smart List AI tool is only available for iOS mobile app users in the U.S. and Canada starting in February.
Dive Insight:
Poshmark is adding the Smart List tool with generative AI to its suite of seller tools to help merchants create high-quality listings, boost product searchability to their page and increase buyer confidence, the company said. As a key player in the secondhand market and social commerce, Poshmark continues to update its app to meet the demands of both customers and sellers.
Poshmark described the tool as the first of future initiatives designed to put AI at its business’s core, the company said in a statement.
"Our vision is to shape the future of resale by leveraging AI and innovative technologies to build a seamless, next-generation marketplace for our community to thrive,” Manish Chandra, founder and CEO of Poshmark, said in a statement. “The launch of Smart List AI exemplifies this vision, empowering sellers to create detailed, compelling listings using just a single photo, saving time while enhancing business scalability."
To get more listings of higher quality on Poshmark, the company recruited the help of AI to generate searchable, accurate key terms for each product listed on the app. Poshmark said the tool reduces listing time by 48% on average.
U.S. consumers, on average, spent about half of their 2023 clothing budget on pre-worn items, according to a secondhand market survey by ThredUp. The resale market continues to grow, positioning itself to reach $73 billion by 2028.
To capitalize on this, Poshmark has rolled out automation and solutions updates to its app. In January, Poshmark debuted a partnership with Loop to add a "Resell on Poshmark" button next to items ineligible for return. U.S. merchants who miss the return window on an item can use the tool to open a Poshmark account and automatically create a listing.
