Over the past few months, Joann has moved to close a number of store locations across the United States.
The retailer confirmed six locations to Retail Dive, including stores in Holyoke, Massachusetts, and Ithaca, New York.
Those locations “are being closed as part of routine store location evaluation and optimization,” Joann’s director of corporate communications, diversity and inclusion, Amanda Hayes, said in an email to Retail Dive. “We also opened new and remodeled locations in recent months, including new stores in Great Falls, MT and Maplewood, MN.”
Local news stations have also reported stores shuttering in Hermitage, Pennsylvania, and Cockeysville, Maryland.
The retailer did not answer questions regarding further closures or plans with openings or remodels this year.

The craft retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March 2024 and became a privately held company owned by its creditors. At the time of the filing, then-CFO Scott Sekella said in the company’s declaration that Joann had 815 stores, 96% of which were profitable. Since that time, Sekella has left the company and Joann announced a slate of new executives, including internal promotions in the chief digital officer and store operations roles. Joann also appointed Michael Prendergast as its interim CEO.
In November, Bloomberg reported that the retailer was asking vendors for rebates and discounts, with the company stating that vendors had shown support and were all paid in full following its bankruptcy.
Joann currently operates around 850 stores in 49 states, according to the company’s website.
