Dive Brief:
- EBay has made a significant change to its iPad app, going with a more Pinterest look that strays away from its previous Amazon-like appearance. The move was first reported by Jason Del Rey at ReCode.
- The overhaul is felt to make it easier for online shoppers to get a visual of the more than 800 million products that eBay sellers offer.
- The design has fewer cluttered product pages and more professional photos, and was produced under the direction of chief product officer RJ Pittman.
Dive Insight:
Interesting timing, right in the midst of the holiday buying season. But the revamp does come at a time that eBay's marketplace business continues to decrease, so a change might be just what's needed.
EBay obviously wants to be thought as the first buying destination shoppers visit for any need, although that is going to be a tough job given Amazon's dominance. But people do like new things, so they may take to the new look. And maybe it will stick. Otherwise, it will end up being just an expensive overhaul.
