Dive Insight:
Couponing is alive and well even in a paperless format, according to the digital deal-finding platform RetailMeNot, which aggregates coupons and other special offers online and via its mobile app. Perhaps due in part to a short shopping season or unseasonably warm weather in many parts of the country leaving winter clothes on the shelf, the Black Friday weekend produced 15% more coupons than in 2014.
If there’s one thing that a mobile phone is good for, it’s finding a deal. Almost 70% of RetailMeNot traffic came from a mobile device during the weekend, indicating that shoppers on the go are seeking out special offers in real time. A separate report from Adobe says that as the holiday approaches, shipping costs from online retailers will rise—and retailers will discount merchandise 17% to 21%, on average.
