Dive Brief:
-
Costco is testing home delivery in Northern California, Los Angeles, and New York City, but the company says it wants to put much of its efforts into keeping people coming to its stores, executive vice president and chief financial officer Richard Galanti told shareholders Thursday.
-
Costco reported Q2 sales growth including a 6% increase at stores opened more than a year, but profits missed estimates. The company said that is in part because it is slow to increase prices even when its costs rise.
-
Galanti said it is using careful product selection and prices to keep its members coming in.
Dive Insight:
Costco appears to be resisting change and says it is intent on working to have products and prices that keep its customers driving to its stores. While same-day delivery heats up for retailers, Costco is testing it only to figure out what consumers want, says its CFO. He says trips out to the company’s stores will continue, as long as there are products at prices that make consumers “go ‘wow’” and keep bringing them back.
