Dive Insight:
The collaboration with Academy Sports and Outdoors marks DoorDash’s continued expansion beyond restaurants. Over the past year or so, the delivery network has added more retailers to its platform through its partnerships with Ulta Beauty, Lowe’s, The Vitamin Shoppe, Camping World and Staples.
The Academy Sports and Outdoors deal provides shoppers with “another convenient way to get the products they need quickly so they can have fun out there,” Chad Fox, executive vice president and chief customer officer, said in a statement.
“Academy Sports and Outdoors is continually looking for ways to help our customers get to the fun faster, and we believe this partnership with DoorDash will provide them with a new option to get the gear they need,” Fox said in a statement.
Earlier this year, Academy Sports and Outdoors said it plans to open between 160 to 180 stores over the next five years, starting with between 15 to 17 new locations in 2024. Last fall, the retailer decided to expand its assortment with an extended partnership with Fanatics and a deal to sell L.L. Bean products online and in stores.
Academy Sports and Outdoors has added DoorDash as a delivery partner after naming a new executive to helm its supply chain operations. In January, the company appointed Robert Howell to be its senior vice president and chief supply chain officer, placing him in charge of the company’s distribution centers, supply chain operations and logistics in the U.S. and abroad.
