Samsung Pay has teamed up with Ziosk to enable smartphone-to-tablet payments for diners at Red Robin Gourmet Burgers and Brews, Friendly’s and Uno Pizzeria & Grill locations, adding a new layer of convenience to the growing area of tabletop devices in casual restaurants.

Ziosk tablets are currently found on top of tables in 3,000 restaurants nationwide, enabling diners to place orders, engage with content and pay their bills. By integrating with Samsung Pay, diners who have activated the payment solution can pay their bill by hovering their phone over the tablet.

“With consumer adoption of mobile payment is still in its early stages, Samsung Pay and Ziosk are helping to drive awareness of the benefits of mobile payment and drive usage among captive audiences of consumers that are already engaging with Ziosk tablets at their dining tables,” said Austen Mulinder, CEO of Ziosk.

“We are seeing customers discover and test mobile wallet usage and functionality, resulting in a steady rise of mobile transactions,” he said.

Integrated experiences
By integrating Samsung Pay, Ziosk hopes to provide diners with a seamless, integrated, flexible and secure option for paying their bill.

Ziosk tablets also work with Android Pay. Diners can also pay by swiping a credit card.

Once Samsung Pay is active on a user’s device, diners at participating restaurants can swipe up on their mobile device to launch Samsung Pay, authorize the transaction with their fingerprint or PIN and then hover the device over the Ziosk card reader to pay.

To promote the new integration and encourage use, Samsung Pay is offering guests at participating Red Robin, Friendly’s and Uno locations to save $5 off their bill of at least $10 when they use Samsung Pay on the Ziosk tablet. The limited-time savings incentive will be automatically applied to guests’ bill when they pay.

The transaction is private and secure as card numbers are not stored on the user’s device, Ziosk tablets or on Samsung servers. Instead, a card’s number is substituted with a unique identifier, called a token.

Dining on mobile
In addition to being compatible with Ziosk tablets, Samsung Pay works with the majority of existing and new terminals in merchant locations, including most magnetic stripe, EMV and NFC terminals.

The partnership with Ziosk is the latest example of how Samsung Pay continues to expand and how it is using special promotions to build consumer adoption.

MasterCard recently invited New York residents to buy items from a specific café with Samsung Pay in exchange for tickets to a Cold War Kids, Capital Cities or Years & Years concert (see story).

Tabletop tablets are a growing area for casual dining restaurants. Ziosk expects, by the end of 2016, to have deployed 170,000 new tablets interacting with more than 50 million guests per month.

“By embedding this technology into their phones, Samsung has empowered all of its customers to seamlessly use Samsung Pay everywhere it is accepted,” Mr. Mulinder said.

“In turn, Ziosk’s table top tablets enable our restaurant partners, including Red Robin, Uno’s and Friendly, to enhance customer experience by allowing them to pay at the table, quickly and securely, using their Samsung phones,” he said.
