This year's presidential election cycle has been especially unpredictable — and stressful.
Over the last few weeks, I’ve explored how the election season has distracted from holiday shopping, as well as how each candidate might shape economic policies and impact the retail industry if they are elected. But Sunday’s presidential debate showed us one bright spot — and its name is Ken Bone. The now-famous undecided voter may not change the outcome of the election on his own, but he did single-handedly boost sales of one particularly normcore red sweater.
This, and more, in this week’s Retail Therapy.
Ken Bone is the best thing to happen this election (for retailers)
Unless you were living under a rock this week, you’ve probably heard about Ken Bone, the average Joe and undecided American voter who became an internet sensation overnight.
Bone attended Sunday’s debate to ask a question about energy policy — but if the debate changed anyone's mind of anything, it was that they needed to immediately buy Bone’s classic dad sweater.
The Izod men’s cable Red Dahlia sweater was completely sold out on Amazon within hours of the debate on Sunday, according to GQ. After restocking on Monday, the sweater sold out again, according to the New York Times, which dubbed the whole episode the "Ken Bone effect." Izod, the casual yet preppy apparel brand, jumped at the opportunity to rebrand the sweater as the “Town Hall look” — and get a little free marketing.

The sweater has since become as American as apple pie — making it hard to believe that it wasn’t even Bone’s first choice outfit. "I had a really nice olive suit that I love a great deal and my mother would have been very proud to see me wearing on television but apparently I have gained about 30 pounds and when I went to get in my car the morning of the debate I split the seat of my pants all the way open," he told CNN in an interview on Monday. "So the red sweater is plan B. I'm glad it worked out."
In one night, Bone went from having a grand total of seven Twitter followers (two of which were his grandmother) to several thousand. With the sweater selling out at retail stores across the country, don’t be surprised if you see Ken Bone walking around this Halloween: Online specialty lingerie/costume retailer Yandy immediately launched a “sexy undecided voter costume” that retails for $95.95. (Can you imagine a "sexy olive pantsuit" costume? Yeah, me neither.)
Is Ralph Lauren Hillary Clinton’s tailor-in-chief?
In other political news, rumors swirled this week that American fashion icon Ralph Lauren has been outfitting the Democratic candidate for president, Hillary Clinton.
The New York Times pointed out that at Sunday's debate, Clinton wore a Ralph Lauren "navy wool double-faced pantsuit with a cream shawl collar and cream wool top to better frame the jovial-serenity-atop-policy-wonk approach with which she has chosen to contrast herself with Mr. Trump." She was also spotted in Ralph Lauren pantsuits at the first presidential debate, the Democratic National Convention and a campaign rally on Roosevelt Island.
The brand has not commented on its relationship with Clinton. But at the very least, Clinton appears to be a huge fan of one of the most iconic American apparel brands.
Here's a closer look at Clinton's Ralph Lauren pantsuit from the first debate (and one of the best parody songs of the election).
Whoopi Goldberg is ready for ugly sweater season
The holidays have arrived — and not far behind are the ugly holiday sweaters. Who doesn't love a good ugly sweater party?
Whoopi Goldberg, that's who. The actress and comedian isn't messing around with hand-me-down sweaters. Goldberg is going all out this year with the launch of a designer line of ugly sweaters that will be sold at Lord & Taylor and Hudson's Bay this holiday season, Women's Wear Daily reports. The collection will offer 11 sweaters featuring cannibalistic gingerbread men saying "Bite me," an octopus menorah with the words "The Arm-Me," and dancing reindeers next to the words "Reindeer Kettes."
Goldberg told WWD the line was inspired from years of wearing uncomfortable sweaters during the holidays. I can understand that, but at the steep price of $139 for an ugly designer sweater, I think I'll be borrowing my grandma's sweater again this year.

The hottest action figure of the season is… the Golden Girls?
Forget about Batman, Spider-Man or Captain America — the hottest action figure this year is a limited edition box set of Rose, Dorothy, Blanche and Sophia dolls from the popular '80s sitcom Golden Girls. The items first flew off the shelves at the New York Comic Con last week, according to The Wall Street Journal, and reportedly sold out at Target stores within 24 hours of being stocked. The set, which retails at $25, was even found on eBay with a price tag of $350.
