These days it seems like just about every retailer and brand under the sun has a subscription or boxed service of some kind. Think Rent the Runway Unlimited, J.C. Penney's Big and Tall box or even BarkBoxes for your pet.
Subscription and boxed service models have erupted over the last few years across retail categories to offer customers more curated and personalized experiences, including at small independent retailers. It's been a winning model for e-commerce companies like Stitch Fix and an interesting experiment for major players like Amazon, Target and the Gap.
Such services are certainly a play at convenience for busy consumers, but that may not be enough. Cancel rates are high, depending on the category, and many retailers are still figuring out exactly how to address the reverse logistics complexities it sparks. So are subscription services a lasting model for the industry?
