Dive Brief:
- Continuing its investment in imaging technology, Wayfair has launched Decorify, a product visualization tool that uses artificial intelligence to redesign customers’ spaces, the company announced Tuesday.
- Using Decorify on their desktop or mobile device, shoppers can upload a picture of their space and view how it could be transformed into different styles, such as bohemian, industrial or mid-century modern.
- Wayfair will populate the designs with products from its catalog, which shoppers can buy directly through the application.
Dive Insight:
With its Decorify tool, Wayfair is continuing its focus on furniture visualization technology that connects shoppers with its products. In a similar move, Wayfair introduced an in-store Digital Design Studio kiosk, which shows various furniture layouts using digital room models, in May. The company piloted the device at its AllModern store in Dedham, Massachusetts.
“Anything we develop or deploy for our customers, including GenAI, must support our mission to help everyone, anywhere create their feeling of home,” Wayfair Chief Technology Officer Fiona Tan said in a statement. “Viewing generative AI through this pragmatic lens enables us to prioritize where and when we deploy development resources and ensure applications like Decorify delight our customers.”
The retailer has also invested in tech that could streamline its logistics operations. Wayfair CEO Niraj Shah noted during a May earnings call that it has reduced its last-mile expenses by updating its data analytics tools to assess whether it’s best to ship products via third-party carriers or its own network.
But as Wayfair has improved its logistics and product imaging technology, the company faced financial challenges in its most recent quarter. It generated $2.8 billion in net revenue, a 7.3% decline year-over-year. Its active customer base also dropped 14.6% from last year to 21.7 million.
