Dive Brief:
-
71% of mobile app users don’t like being tracked while in stores, and 56% don’t want to receive push notifications when they’re in a store, according to a survey by Retale, a location-based shopping platform company.
-
Retale surveyed more than 3,000 iOS and Android app users, and found that iOS users are somewhat more receptive to mobile intrusions.
-
Even many mobile app users were unaware of payment technologies and in-store location technologies like iBeacon, the survey found.
Dive Insight:
While many surveys have found that shoppers want to be made aware that they're being tracked, this survey shows that retailers may need to do a better job of communicating with shoppers about why mobile apps and other technologies may be valuable to them. This would go beyond simply notifying customers about iBeacon and other possibly intrusive technologies, but also explaining their upsides to the customer when it comes to payment ease, coupons, and other benefits when shopping in the store.
