Clothing retailers are continually morphing and changing to fit with the times. Sometimes a change in merchandise is necessary to stay relevant and popular with consumers. Sometimes an entire overhaul of the business structure is required to keep the company afloat.
Regardless of the type of change, all retailers have morphed since their founding, be it a century or just two decades ago. Retail Dive took a closer look at Abercrombie & Fitch, Urban Outfitters, and Delia's to compare how far the brands have come and uncover what changes helped get them there.
Abercrombie & Fitch
Abercrombie & Fitch is the oldest retailer of the bunch, once catering to the likes of Ernest Hemingway and Theodore Roosevelt. In business for more than 100 years, A&F and has gone through several major overhauls. Despite some close run-ins with extinction, it remains in business today.
Urban Outfitters
Urban Outfitters, Inc., known for its controversial clothing, began as an idea for co-founder Scott Belair's business class. With a business plan targeting college students across the country, your best bet for finding an Urban Outfitters is finding a large college campus first.
Delia's
Although Delia's Inc. has roots in the mail catalog business, the company announced last month that it is doing away their catalog and is looking for a buyer.
